Some of you may not know this, but onenitedrive and I are rat owners and lovers. Rats (surprisingly enough to most people) make some of the best pets you could imagine. They're like a combination between a cat and a dog (clean, intelligent, likes attention and being pet). We currently have 4 males.

Anyway, on a rat message board I'm a member of, Goosemoose, there's a thread for the comments rat owners get about their rats, and it's hilarious! Here are some of my favorites that I thought I'd share with you guys.

I took my hairless rat to Petsmart with me one day, and I got a comment from an old woman of all people lol. "What a cute iguana". I educated her, and then when she left, laughed like mad!



Once when I took my rat Avika to the park, an old guy came up to me and goes,
"What have you got there?"
I pull Avika out of my hoodie and say,
"Oh its a rat!"
He looks all disgusted,
"Oh"
and walks away as fast as he can.



Maybe I am just a mean person but........ I work at a nature center and we use rats alot of the time to talk about differences in animals, etc etc etc. Well the rats are one of the few animals that the children get to touch! Usually it is quite busy and full of children so I don't bother bringing the animals to all the parents also, except for the rats. I introduce the rats, talk about how wonderful they are, get the kids all excited about getting to pet a rat and then I make the big annoucement.... " Just incase there are any of you boys and girls who might be nervous about petting a rat, all the parents in the back are going to show you that there is nothing to be afraid of." I walk back to all the parents and have them pet the rats. They don't dare not too because of all the kids watching them. *evil laughter* The looks on their face really make my day!!



a few weeks ago i went to to the supermarket and noticed they had a certain brand of baby food knocked down to less than half price. so, i start scooping up the yummy kinds my girls like and filling the cart. when i go to get checked in the girl at the counter says, "wow, that's a great price, eh?" and i say, "yep, should keep the rats fed for a while". not thinking about what i had said, i looked on her face and she was giving me the most disgusted "you call your kids rats???" look and was about one second away from calling social services. so, i immediately explain, "no no, my kids are rats...the actual rodent kind". she laughed and gave me a relieved look.



Last spring I was purchasing some swim tubes at the Dollar Tree when the college aged guy said, "These swim tubes are a lot of fun in the pool, arent' them!" I said, "Yes, but these are to rat-proof my bedroom." Seeing the "HORRIFIED" look on the women in line behind me, I thought to make it better by adding, "Oh, no, our home doesn't have feral rats coming in--these are for my pet rats so they can play in the bedroom!" Suddenly they all looked even MORE horrified--so I just laughed and took my tubes to split and put along the baseboard with electric cords inside them. I couldn't wait to tell my friends and relatives who also had a great laugh!



Woman: Aww, what do you have in there?
Me: They're rats.
Woman: Oh wow, that hamster in front is just too cute!
Me: Thank you! His name's Gabriel, he's actually a rat.
Woman: I had hamsters when I was younger - none as big or pretty as him!
Me: He's actually a rat.
Woman: What kind of hamster cage do you keep him in?



" I really wonder about you. Having rats at home is strange, very strange"

"Wow. I wish I knew about how great rats are before I got a dog."


People often think I have rat terriers when I tell them that I have rats. Then I explain, "no, they're the rodent not the canine."



And the things children say...

At Petco...

Girl, approx 6 years old... "Look at that little rat!"

My response: "That's a mouse."

Boy (brother?) approx 8 years old... "Well look at this huge mouse!"

My response: "That's a rat."

I really do wonder about the younger generation sometimes.



I went to EB games about a week ago to put a reservation on the new Pokemon game comming out (ok I'm 23---but heck--their cute!). A few if the guys at the store know me cause I'm the local WOW addict and always go in and ask them if they have any WOW signs they are getting rid of and chat about the game.

Well one of the guys was opening boxes and had some damaged products he was pulling out...they were trying to figure out what happened to them and I said maybe a rat ate them. Then they said oh rats wouldn't do that much damage. I said Oh I have rats at home that would rip apart a carboard box in no time flat. I said "as a matter of fact I give them small boxes sometimes to play with.

A hush fell over the store......you could hear the gears turning (or the hamsters squeaking to a halt).

"You give rats playtoys?" "I mean I knew you were weird but you play with your infestation?"

I said "No....I have rats as pets....."

The silence continues

"SO you catch them and keep them in a cage or something?"

I whip out my wallet with my rat pics and my phone which has a background of Goober...my nekkid man rattie.
"do these look like wild rats?....I have 9---they make really awesome pets" I explain how most of them are rescues and a few were feeder bin rats.

Then the comments about do I shave my rat....I said "yes, but I'm broke cause I keep running out of money for razorblades" of course I told them no after they stared at me like I was insane. LOL boys are funny. I think they'll believe anything....

The one guy that I know pretty good has a bic'd head very shiny....he said "wow that would make the perfect pet match for me."

I promised them I'd bring them by next time I came in... hehehe.



I was walking down the street with my rat, Briar, one day and a dad and his two boy noticed my rat. I held him down for them to look at them, and one of the kids said, "So, how did you catch him?"

I have also had multiple people say, "Oh, is that a guinea pig?" One time, after I explained that, no, he's a rat... the person nodded and said, "Oh, yeah, I used to have pet rats."

I mean, you have OWNED rats, and you still can't tell the difference?

Another time I got asked by a guy in my neighbourhood who has seem my rats multiple times, "Soo... That's a ferret, right?"

"No, he's a rat."

"Ohhhhh... There's a difference?"

So I had to explain to him that yes, they are different animals, and that one was a fluffy tailed predatory weasel about three times the size of a rat, and the other was a semi-naked-tailed omnivorous rodent.

He was really confused.

I have also had, when I was standing about ten feet away, my rat was on my shoulder and had a very obvious harness leash on.... "Omigawd! What is that?"

"He's a rat."

"Ohhh.... Is he... uh... SECURE?"

Yes, lady, my rat is going to wriggle out of his leash, leap through the air, and viciously murder you. Obviously.



My dad is horrible grossed out by my rats, one time he saw me giving them some cheerios, and he freaked out:

Him: Well don't give them PEOPLE food! Then they'll never eat their own food again!"

Then when we got our new rat, just a little while ago:
Her: Well, Honey, I'm just not sure it's a good idea.
Me: Why not?
Her: Well you do know it's going to die right? I'll only buy you this new rat if you promise not to cry.

I lied about the not crying, I'm going to bawl like a baby, and then get another one



Kid (fascinated by my rats): What do they eat?
Me: They eat seeds, veggies, and fruits all mashed up into a block (trying to explain HT to a 5 year old)
Kid: ...Do they eat anything else?
Me: Sometimes cheerios and crackers...
Kid: ...nothing else?
Me: Um, I don't think so...
Kid: So they don't eat babies or anything?



"Your rat is hateful to me when I give her treats."
"How is she hateful?"
"She snatches them and runs off!"
"She just wants to eat it."
"No, she's hateful."

I found out the reason why a few days later when I watched my mom give Clover a yogurt treat. She was holding it too far from the bars!
*poor little Clovers tries to squeeze far enough through bar to get treat*
"See? She's being hateful!
*laughing* "Mom, you're not holding it close enough to her! She can't reach it! Just open the door and give it to her!"
"I can't, she might bite me!"
"She will not bite you, she never bites!"
"But she might..."



I was recently at JoAnn Fabrics buying some fleece and cotton prints. A lady was cutting the fabric for me.
Lady: "You are buying a lot of fabric, are you a teacher?"
Me: "No."
My Boyfriend: "Tell her what they're for."
Me: "I make hammocks and bedding for my pet rats."
Lady: "Ohhh...." accompanied by a weird look and silence as she finishes cutting everything.

Ahahahahah! *tear* Those are pretty good, Fate! xD
I have a neighbor who has a couple pet rats.

Sounds about right. My dorm once had that conversation, "And you guys need to CLEAN THE SINK when you shave!"

And here's one for more amusement. An amusing and absolutely true classic.

You know as a Windows vs Mac thing its hilarious but as an audio guy and the fact it LOOKS like an effects box. All those knobs just look sexy to me like its the effects box from an audio engineers wet dream. XD

Uh, it's men versus women, actually.

Okay, so here's a story that I just thought of really randomly while blow drying my hair today. (Ultra random -- I know!)

Back in high school, I was close friends with a Japanese exchange student named Kimiko (who later attended the same community college as I did, but we've since lost contact). I'd go over to her host parents' house a lot to hang out or to pick her up and go out to do things.

Well, one time while I was over there, we were surfing the net on her host parents' computer. I was showing her my Deviant Art page, and then her host mom came over and asked what that was. I told her that it was Deviant Art, where I upload all of my artwork. Back then, I hadn't ever given the name of the site any real thought at all, as I just had known it for so long. (On my old account, I was a member for 6 years.) Well, she looked at me really questioningly, wearing a face of disapproval.

When I didn't pick on what was the matter, she asked me "So, there isn't any porn on there, is there?"

I was young and naive, so I was kind of taken aback. I shook my head and said, "Oh, no! No... Just regular art."

It got me thinking though: I wonder why Deviant Art is named that.

Um... Probably because there is porn on that site... Or at least nudes- and not all of them tasteful...

Really? Oh. o.o I didn't think they really allowed that. I mean, I knew that you can rate your art so that it's mature, but I just figured that was for gore or artistic nudes. I guess I never went looking for anything distasteful though.

I didn't go around looking for anything distasteful, either. I was just looking for role play inspiration. I'm sure they just have their art as "artistic nudes" but some of those are really... not very artistic.

Cameras are a drinker's worst enemy.
