Anyone else notice that Elithanathile is spelled the same forward and backwards? Wink

Shallan is the name of the girl. Kaladin--like Paladin with a K. And Sylphren, like sylph-spren. Also, Jasnah Kholin, and of course Szeth (the white ninja! xD).

I liked in the beginning to see the corrupted form of the Heralds' names after over 4,000 years.
And I'm insanely curious why the Parshendi made the treaty only to break it, why they're fighting over the Shattered Plains, and what the Vengeance Pact is about.

I feel like by the end of the book we'll all be experts on the world he's built without even having to spend too much effort. :3 Lots of things are repeated (in a way that doesn't feel repetitious), like the safehand and the lighteyes/darkeyes.

Spren are basically sprites. I like their presence in the world because they serve an interesting role in providing proof of things that we on Earth didn't have, like proof what works against rot. Not only does it just plain work, it's proven to work by the reactions of the spren. All sorts of crafts and discoveries would have come about in totally different ways just because of their existence.

And does Syl remind anyone else of Navi? ^_^

Haha, Syl does remind me of Navi! XD. And I did not notice that the name Elithanathile was a palindrome! Oh, actually, not quite. To be a true palindrome, it would have to be Elithanahtile.

I also finished through chapter 8.

I can admit that I am intrigued with the characters and thoroughly lost when it comes to the magic system. I don't understand the difference between what Jasnah has on her hand to the spheres they use everyday. I understand it has transformation power...but why? I feel like I missed the point.

Ohh, maybe that's what "glyphpairs" are supposed to be!

I'm sure before long we'll learn all about the intricacies of the magic system. He has to avoid an info dump, so it'll come a little at a time, probably as Shallan gets opportunities to observe and (I assume) attempt to (secretly?) learn the art.

Has anyone else noticed that at the beginning of every "present day" chapter, there is a passage of words spoken by random people just before they die? I'm really curious what this purpose is. Will Sanderson do anything with it, or will he just let the mystery of it remain?

Alright, I am caught up through the interludes.

I would like to say that I was really glad to see Szeth again. I wasn't sure where he was on the timeline of things (like, was it hundreds of years prior to Kaladin and Shallan's stories?) but now it seems clear that that chapter was five years prior to present day.

A few notes on what I've read -

Kaladin. I wish it was a bit clearer how he was enslaved...did I miss something or is it not yet revealed? Also, why can't he die?

Shallan. I am most and least interested in her plot. I like the character and the back history, the only thing that bothers me is WHY she is there. To steal that bracelet thingy. I just...don't understand how that is the only thing that can save her family.

Oh, and we are introduced to Shallan's brother. Can we just say, creepy? I was literally grimacing while reading that chapter. Poor crabs Sad

Also just thought I'd mention that I am reading everything you guys write here and sometimes I just don't have time to respond right away, and by the time I have time to write I am exhausted and have forgotten stuff. Nevertheless I am reading and enjoying this!

He can't die because he really IS Stormblessed. Wink
Think about it, not only does he survive all that against all odds, but a windspren (wind, air, storm) is so attracted to what he does that she sticks around long enough to start taking on greater sentience.
I haven't figured out how he was enslaved either, but betrayal was involved. It was mentioned somewhere in one of Kaladin's posts. (lol, as if it's a RP xDD)

Shallan has to go after magic because how will we poor readers ever get what the magic is like otherwise? ^^
And yes, Shallan's siblings make me hope their oldest brother is still alive somehow. O__O

Ok, I pushed through to 14. Gonna try and catch up to 20 within the next couple of days. I was confused as to who was who with Dalinar, adolin, and co .. I think I understand now. The hunt scene was really really cool. While I sort of expected for them to lose control of the situation, reading about shardplates and blades in action was uuuuhmazing.

I'm through Chapter 23.
Looking forward to how the whole war goes. If they'll get the Parshendi, and how Kaladin does, and if his crew will ascend.

Has anyone figured out what happened with Kaladin, how he got captured and all?
We've heard betrayal happened. And now Kaladin gets all upset talking about Shardplate traditions.

They were going after a shardplate bearer in the beginning. Maybe they got him, but they didn't let Kaladin keep the shardplate? And he put up a fuss, so to shut him up they made him a slave?

Oh! And the Knights Radiant. 8)That bit was great! I wonder what happened to them that they were disbanded/killed/stopped/whatever and their shardplates dispersed.

I wonder what's going on with Shallan. Is there going to be a time-skip where she's suddenly awesome? or say, been studying monotonously and wouldn't want to read about all that, so we come back when things get good?

"So... what's Shallan been up to while we've been over here with Kaladin and Dalinar?"
"Studying."
"That's it?"
"Yeah."
"No... encounters, no interactions, just--boom--study?"
"Sure. Yup. Don't worry about it. =3"
"... <_<"
