2012: The Changed

On December 21, 2012, the world did not end. However, it did change completely and irrevocably.

Upon this date, the Earth made herself known as a force to be reckoned with by connecting with individuals across the globe. People went to bed average and woke the next morning with a splitting headache and the ability to commune, manipulate and control one of Her natural elements. Flame, Air, Water, Stone, Metal and Wood began to respond to the wills and thoughts of the Changed, or the Abnormals, as they came to be known by those without the power.

Occasionally, one of the Changed would speak with an unintelligible voice, speaking nonsense for all intents and purposes…except to other Changed. Others who had been Changed understood the intent if not the words; Mother Nature was here and she was pissed.

As it can be imagined, the first to come forward were immediately quarantined and studied, believed to have achieved a form of evolution. In the first days, there was bloodshed as some chose to take advantage of their new abilities and forced law enforcement to take them down rather than surrender.

A new genre of criminal came and went in a wave of terror, pain and bloodshed. The end of the ‘super criminal’ came in the form of opposing Abnormals, those that had the power and the will to fight against the oppression of the less-than-benevolent.

Those who were not slain by human means or other Changed individuals either learned to thrive and control their abilities or they were torn apart by them. The government, in an effort to quell the fears of those without powers and to control or protect (depending on the legislator) the Changed, began issuing laws to regulate the use of these abilities and to severely punish those caught using them without proper authority.

The year is now 2022, ten years since the world was altered by Nature. Life has mostly gone on as normal. There are no flying cars, and people do not all own rocket packs, but technology has advanced.

The government has created special units to deal with new rogue Abnormals and are keeping a tight reign on all that they can. There are those who oppose this control, and they work as they can against the government to rescue and protect those who have been changed.

-For your history, I am assuming your first post will deal with coming into your power, so try to keep the history portion of your character sheet to stuff you dont mention in your first post that is relevant to the RP.

Brief History: Gideon was 18 when he took on his power, one of the first to do so. Initially, he heard the voice of Water speaking to him in the rain or when he was at the pool. By the time the truth of the Change reached the world, Gideon was already able to manipulate a sink full of water into various forms and shapes and make the water in the tub go from liquid to frozen solid to liquid again almost instantaneously.

Believing that he had a responsibility to those who struggled with their elements, especially Fire, Gideon began to search for them, using internet chat rooms and forums to try to bring them together. This only brought the Feds to his doorstep, instead. Gideon soon discovered the only way to maintain control of his freedom was to drop off the grid, restricting his communications with the Changed and Abnormal communities to word of mouth and cryptic notes left in predetermined locations.

At 28, Gideon has a decent network of fellow Changed and Normals alike set up to help him locate new Changed and to get him to them as soon as possible before they are abducted and tested on for the good of the people. His ultimate goal is to integrate with the whole of society, as he feels that the change will happen to everyone, eventually. Until then, he wants to protect the individual freedoms and safety of those who were changed against their will.
