Mythology's Finest Empty Mythology's Finest

Post by YenWen Sun Apr 11, 2010 6:32 pm

The Greek Gods are a fascinating brood. One of the only sets of deities that are not infallible, but merely powerful creators who must be pleased like normal people. They have wants and needs like man, but lack the ability to die by anything other than the hand of another god of greater power, or greater wit. They cheat, lie, steal, commit adultery, murder, and even feel guilt. They have families both on Olympus and Earth which they care for and mother or father. But they also commit the same wrongs to their offspring as the people of this earth.

If not appeased, they spite. They are children throwing tantrums at all times. It would almost seem they are human, if not for their continuous displays throughout generations. Their lives are endless occurrences by which humans can only relate.

The Gods have lives as we do. Families, as we do. Friends, as we do. Mistakes, as we do. How can we not relate their tales?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~
In my roleplay idea, as I've no real idea if this has been done on this forum before, is to act in the way of the Gods. My research in their lives, however, has brought me to an endless list of characters, so I do hope we can stick to the basics. The memorizing of so many names actually hurts my head.

The Higher Deities:
Also known as The Olympian Deities, these are the Gods known by most in pop culture. They are the most prominent in the myths and were the most praised by the Greeks.

Spoiler:

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Primordial Deities:

Spoiler:

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Lesser Gods:
Although important enough for their own category and recognition, they were not strong enough figures for such appraisal given to the likes of The Olympian Gods.
Spoiler:

~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Now, I don't expect this many people to join. Not in the slightest. I'm barely expecting the 12 Olympians to be taken, but I do think these other lesser and primordial Gods are good for reference and an idea at how large this mythology base is. Anyone up for it?

You have no idea how excited this makes me! Take as many as you like, who ever you like. I'm thinking as soon as all the Olympians are taken, I think I'll close it up.
As for me, I'll be taking Artemis and Nyx. I'll put up a character sheet in a few moments.

Mythology's Finest Hermes11

Bird of Hermes, you must obviously be Hermes or it will all be too confusing Smile I shall stick with Eros and maybe Dionysus (so we can fill up the pantheon).

How exaclty will this play out? Do you have some sort of storyline?

I am interested and will probably take the role of Poseidon.

In the setup I have I can't honestly keep a solid plot line to it. It's more of a go with it as it grows. The personality and power of the Gods is sure to keep it entertaining.

Mythology's Finest Hermes10

Hermes: God of travel, messengers, trade, thievery, cunning wiles, language, writing, diplomacy, athletics, and animal husbandry. He is the messenger of the gods, a psychopomp who leads the souls of the dead into Hades' realm, and the son of Zeus and Maia. His symbols include the herald's wand or caduceus, winged sandals, and a traveler's cap.

Good picture, no?

God(dess): Selene
Personality: A calm woman, she doesn't have much to fret about. She cares for the humans below Olympus and for her brother, Helios, as well.
Appearance:
Mythology's Finest Card-goddess-moon-KE-38254
Current status among their fellow Gods:
Selene mainly hangs out with her brother Helios. She doesn't care much for the higher gods/goddesses. Though she doesn't care for the higher gods/godesses, she does respect them

Extra Information:

Hope this is all okay.

Dionysus
God of wine, parties and festivals, madness, drunkenness and pleasure. He is the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele. His symbols include the thyrsus (a pine-cone tipped staff), drinking cup, grape vine and a crown of ivy.

Personality:
Dio has never had a hangover in his life and consequently has a rather jolly time of it. He is always to be found at the center of the party, always generous towards his followers and always up for a bit of rumpy pumpy. Nowadays Dio is usually to be found lounging in the form of an overweight man on a chaise-long, though in his youth he was eerily beautiful. He wears a red silk dressing gown not unlike the one worn by Hugh Hefnor, smokes a pipe and enjoys doing crosswords, all secrets he keeps from the other gods in case they damage his reputation.

Appearance:
Mythology's Finest Dionos11

Current status among his fellow Gods:
Dio enjoys the company of Aphrodite, with whom he has had a child, Priapus (now one of the retinue). He often trying for a repeat performance, but without much hope. Illogically, Dio and Hephaestus get along well, Aphro's adultary giving them something to bond over.
Dio does not get along with Apollo, whom he considers a bit of a know-it-all, and Hera still resents Dio as the illegitimate child of her husband.

Mother: Semele; Father: Zeus; Son: Priapus;

Extra Information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionysus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollonian_and_Dionysian
Followed by a retinue of drunken revellers called maenads (raving women) and satyrs (men) and the odd nymph or centaur. Rides a chariot drawn by panthers and has a riding-leopard.

Oh, I would most certainly be interested!

I believe that, if there are no objections, will take up Zeus. For, as far as my knowledge goes, although he is the 'king' of gods, he isn't the most powerful, yes?

Mythology's Finest Empty Setting

Post by YenWen Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:27 pm

While being gods allows us the convenience of being anywhere we want in the world, I would like to know your opinions on the time era. I personally prefer setting this in modern times, however, this isn't just my role play. Does gods set to meddle in modern affairs sound good?

And, Dax, Zeus isn't in the least the most powerful. He's a big bully, I'd say. Like that big kid on the playground that turns purple when he's made fun of, but starts crying if he gets hit first.

How's about you private message me your profiles as you have them, so we can leave most of the room in the thread for discussion. (Sometimes a numerous amount of profile posts is intimidating)

If you want to update your profiles to fit a modern setting, I would. I'm going to update my own, redraw Artemis (as I haven't started on Nyx yet). And when I say modern setting, I mean today. Anywhere in the world, of their choice, seeing as how many places their are now that weren't there in the Golden Age.

If any of you want, since I need the practice, I can draw busts for you of any character designs you have in mind, as long as you give me a good description. That's what I'm doing for my own characters. But keep in mind, they won't be in color, just a sketch.

I like the idea of an urban setting and have already chose my gods (Appolo and Erebos) and I like the idea of the urban setting too. But I was wondering if we could use our characters and pit them against each other to create a conflict. Is that a good idea or bad...?

The Old Gods

Now they are condemned
to live in cracks
in bubbles of plaster and rust
and spiders' webs
behind the furniture:

speaking a derelict language
to empty space,
sealed with the vapour
in bottles, closed in the blown
robins' eggs
in some abandoned loft.

Each has its given power.
Each has its heart, its secret,
its local name,
and each has its way of learning
the skill of return,
the science of bleeding through, when anger or fear
is fuzzing the surface,
making us dizzy and whole.

I have someone trying for Apollo, I'm not sure if he has it done yet or not, so you are still welcome to make a profile for it. It's first come, first serve, but no one has applied or mentioned wanting Ares. I say go for both, if you'd like.
And Bird of Hermes, I like your idea. It has a very 'incognito'-esque feel to it, which is what I was hoping for. Something they use to be around mortals more often, that fits their personality. Like how I see Nyx hanging around night clubs as much as possible and Artemis being a feminist in California.
