My earlier complaint has now be swapped out for "I just pulled my entire CD drive out of my laptop, and I don't think I'm supposed to be able to do that."

laptops do that. It's so you can swap the drive out for something else like another hard drive. It should have some sort of clip that holds it in or it just snaps into place
