Well, this was certainly a happy development, Jack thought to himself with an injection of sarcasm. The external hull cameras did not paint a pretty picture. Inside the sandy, dust-ridden Tiberian spaceport, the Endeavor sat grounded, the controls locked by the facility's security system almost as soon as the ship had docked. Outside on the grounds, a posse of about a dozen men stood waiting, some with arms folded across their chests or hands resting on holstered firearms. His contacts must have been entertaining thoughts of taking the cargo he was to deliver to them without paying his share. At least, that was Jack's first thoughts. And truthfully the why was the least of his concerns at that time. There was no way he could just sit in his ship and wait them out; they would either eventually cut their way in, or just straight up obliterate his ship and scavenge from whatever was left. And it wasn't like Endeavor sported any armaments of its own.

"Well, hell..." Jack muttered under his breath, sitting back in his seat at Endeavor's helm. He was certainly feeling rather limited with his options at this point.

The computer interface flickered and went quiet. Surreal wiggled in her chair, waiting for the computer to start back up. Nothing happened. The computer didn't reboot with a splutter of indignant groans and beeps. Surreal pulled her USB cable out of the computer's port.

She slowly counted to ten and plugged the USB cable back into the computer. A blimp of static danced up the wire. The ship's computer was asleep and distant. She couldn't reach any of the programs. Even the ship's flight data was distant. Locked. Stuck in a part of cyber space Surreal couldn't touch. Yet.

“You,” Surreal frowned. Swiveling in her seat, she turned to face Jack Gates. The Endeavor's captain looked unhappy. He sat slumped in his chair with a hand over his face, ignoring her.

Surreal glanced at the ship's controls. The hull camera displays caught her attention. Armed men surrounded the Endeavor. They looked dusty; the sandy environment had not treated them kindly. But their firearms looked clean and their faces were tight with anticipation.

“I can't believe you let them hack my computer!”

Surreal pulled the USB cable back out of the ship computer's port. Carefully, she unhooked the cable from her own port and coiled the wire. She tapped her fingers against the computer's interface. Synthetic skin fingerprints smudged the screen.

A disabled ship and armed men were a problem. A big problem.

“They,” Surreal pointed to the camera displays of armed men, “are your problem. Do something.” She fixed Jack with a glare. A moment later she poked him in the shoulder for good measure. “I'll get the computer back. And,” a smug smile curled her lips, “I'll trash their security system.”

Sometimes, Surreal's mannerisms could almost make Jack forget that she wasn't a flesh, blood, and bone human being. It wasn't the first time he found himself reminding himself that she was in fact circuitry, motherboards, and synthetics.

And "her computer?"

However, with light starcraft piloting, long-distance navigation planet- and star-side, marksman and expert qualifications in various small arms (and gunnery qualifications in some military ship-borne weapon systems,) and speaking two languages in addition to standard English, there were some skills that Jack only held basic, rudimentary knowledge in, while Surreal excelled. And, Jack perhaps came to rely on her - it - for that reason. Whether he would openly confess that point was up for deliberation.

"Do it," he said after she spoke, rising from his chair to leave the bridge, only then wondering just what the hell he could do to buy Surreal time to work her magic, preferably before those thugs blew a nice big hole in his ship. He started to jog at that thought, heading first for his small cabin. Hanging over the seat back of the chair at his desk were Jack's belt and holster. Snatching it up, he clicked the belt around his waist and strapped the holster to his thigh as he hurried towards the small airlock that accommodated Endeavor's loading-slash-unloading ramp. Taking a deep breath, Jack removed his weapon from its holster, checking it over before returning it to its place and finally slapping the ramp controls. As the ramp's locks disengaged, Jack let out the breath he had been holding, and silently swore to himself to do more to think up an actual plan next time, as long as there was a next time.
