Star Wars Episode VII

Now that Disney has bought Lucasfilm LTD. they have announced Episode 7 is in the works and scheduled for a 2015 release.

I do not know how I feel about this. As a Star Wars fan it will be cool to see it back on the big screen. However, these new movies are going to make the Expanded Universe, books, comics, video games, etc.. which I love pretty much infinities. I do not like this at all. I have enjoyed the EU and love the stories they told. Now due to the new movies most likely these stories will become non-canon, as if they never happened. I hope I am wrong, maybe they can figure a way to make them work. But they have announced that Episode 7 will be a original story, not based on any novel or comic.

I will go and watch it obviously, but just like the Clone Wars cartoon, I will probably consider these movies not part of my Star Wars universe.

I think the EU is too strongly established among fans to be thrown out. Not that I think Disney is better than to attempt that, but they would have to be ready for a real flop like John Carter. I don't think they can afford that (figuratively speaking....). I don't think they will do a worthy job of it either way though.

I was pretty excited about Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm.

As a little girl, I absolutely adored Star Wars! I used to watch the movies with my dad all the time; especially on weekends when my mother went out with her friends. I still love watching Star Wars; although, admittedly, I never got into the extended universe.

The prospect of seeing a new Star Wars film—that's pretty exciting. But, once the childhood nostalgia and initial excitement rub off, I'm not really sure how I feel about another Star Wars movie. A new film has the potential to be amazing. Yet… I don't know.

(Regardless, I'll definitely go see the movie.)

Disney's getting Lucasfilm didn't surprise me much, what with the Indiana Jones and Star Wars attractions in their parks. Like with Marvel, I didn't mind all too much. But the idea of another Star Wars film provokes very mixed feelings.

I lived and breathed Star Wars for almost ten years. I still love it, I memorized almost every line of each film and could probably still recite them. I fell in love with all the characters, prequels included. Seeing Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith in theaters are two of my fondest memories. So part of me is excited to be in the theater again, seeing new content. But, I just don't know how to feel.

A hugely unpopular opinion among diehard Star Wars fans, I don't enjoy the EU. Anything after Return of the Jedi, I just don't care for. I can handle Clone Wars stuff and most things leading up to Phantom Menace, but, the main bulk of EU, I just don't enjoy. Don't ask me why; I just don't. And I'm so out of the loop, I don't know what's canon anymore. The whole escapade with the constant returns of Palpatine in clone bodies (is that still a thing?), I didn't care for. I just end the story with Return of the Jedi, y'know?

Also, if we're basing this around the EU, are we getting our original cast back? I adore them all, but I don't think they have it in them to play the characters again and I doubt they even want to. And the idea of recasting Luke, Han and Leia doesn't sit well with me. And introducing an entire new cast of characters...that might be hard to sell.

I have limited knowledge of what's going on with all this. So don't hold me to anything I've said. Regardless, I'll be seeing the movie. Like with the Last Airbender, it'd be wrong as a fan not to see it, even if it's pretty gosh darn awful. Disney can make a good movie, so I'll try and keep my hopes high. But, I won't lie, I feel like I'm floating here with my unpopular opinion. xD

Honestly, I can't say I'm really thrilled about it. I'm a SW fan without a doubt, but I've sort of given up on the entire franchise, because it's overly cluttered with cliches and what I consider to be fan-fiction grade of writing. (of course, I make exceptions for writers such as Timothy Zahn, but how many writers of his caliber can the EU boast?) Nowadays, when I want to get my SW kick, I just fire up the movies or play one of the many games built around it.

Star Wars is a dried up well for me, everything has been done to death and George Lucas certainly wasn't bringing any new ideas to the table. So maybe Disney will breathe some fresh life into it. Let's not forget they make good movies as well - Pirates of the Caribbean, Avengers, Chronicles of Narnia, etc...

Either way, I'll probably go watch it when it comes out, but with zero expectations. If it's good, it's good; if it's bad - then tough luck, but it's not like the prequels were the pinnacle of move-making either.

I heard the news and was like, "The world needs to end." -_-

Let's just say my expectations are somewhere along the negative half of the number line, and I hold a slim hope that, by expecting horror of horrors, I just might persuade the universe to eke a passable Star Wars out of Disney.

*shiver* Ugh, just saying the two brands in the same sentence gives me chills. -_-

As a Star Wars fan who is also an avid reader of the books, I'm pretty excited about this. I had my doubts at first, but I sat back and thought about it, and I've decided that I have more positive thoughts than negative about it.

Yeah, there's a chance that it'll be awful (Star Wars story standards, not Disney standards). There's a chance that it'll rip canon of the book timeline to shreds. There's a chance that bringing back Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford (though I don't remember him being named in the article I read) might disrupt the fond memories I had of them in the originals.

But on the other hand, there's a chance it'll be awesome. Disney has made great films in the past - just look at how great The Avengers was! There's a chance that Disney will support how deeply rooted the fanbase is for the book timeline. They don't have to pull everything from it, but I'm hoping I can count on them to at least play off the big parts (i.e., if they go with "the next generation", all I care about is that they stick to the characters already made and established, at whatever point in the timeline they choose to make the movie). I don't see DIsney having too big an issue with this. And I don't see Disney giving too large a role to any returning characters, no matter how important they were to the older movies. The stories of Luke, Leia, and Han do continue into the books, but if Disney really is going to make a new Star Wars movie "every two to three years", as one article said, I think they're going to have to pass the mantle to new characters. They're going to put their stamp on the Star Wars franchise. It'll be like "yeah. We did that. Love us for it."

On a different note, my hopes for this movie have been raised considerably after hearing that the guy who wrote Toy Story 3 will be directing it. I loved Toy Story 3. =)

I still am very nervous about this. While on vacation I went to meet with the guy who actually built the original Yoda muppet for the Original Trilogy and he gave me some behind the scenes news. First, it will be Pixar doing the special effects. So the look will be different. Second, Disney is going to aim it for children even more than Lucas did. How much more can you aim it at kids?

Now, as for the EU, I know that Pablo Hildago is very good at making everything fit. But what if, Luke is given a wife, who is not Mara Jade? How can that be retconned? Does that mean Mara was never Luke's wife? Which means no Ben Skywalker either. I hope at least they keep the major things, like Han and Leia beinmg married, and having three children named Jacen, Anakin and Jaina, Luke reforming the Jedi Order.

I will just have to wait and see.
