In need of critique.

Post by Aya MacArthur on Tue May 25, 2010 9:41 am

I have been hired to draw three portraits of a baby boy. I am to base these drawings off of pictures I am given. I have drawn one. Please, tell me what you think.

When you say draw, do you mean full out? Like color and all that stuff? Or just black and white sketchy? Other than that, if you won't be offended, I'd like to say that overall this is really good. I mean, wow. You can definitely draw cause I can't draw for nothing. Haha, baby looks like he's posing, lolz. But the lips bother me a bit. The picture shows a more....well it looks like a boomerang arch nearly, but...I don't know. I just think the lips are off a bit. But hey, we're not perfect. I'm sorry that someone who doesn't know much has responded here, (Me.) Just thought I'd TRY to help, lolz. But honestly, it still looks nice.

The lips were bothering me too. I redid them so much, that the bumps on the canvas are now nonexistent. Needless to say, this child's grandmother loves the picture.

Of course the grandmother would love the picture. It's of her baby's baby! It is not, in the least bit, poorly done. It's really nice. I was just being really nit-picky...(Is that right spelling? lolz) So yeah.

Nit-picky is how I would spell it and describe myself when it comes to art. Lol.

Wow, this is good, and of course with any good works comes the nit-picking of small details.

I agree about the lips, but that's not what I noticed first. Those the babe have a scar to the right of his right eyebrow? In the picture that looks like a blood vessel, but on your drawing it looks like a scar.

I'll also admit not to drawing much, or being very good. And once again I want to say that overall this drawing is very good. Smile

I agree that the blood vein looks too much like a scar in the drawing. I think if it wasn't such a definite line (like if it had smaller lines branching off from it, though hardly noticeable) it would look a little better. I also think that the problem with the lips is that they aren't turned down enough. The way they are makes them look...emotionless I think. In the actual picture, the lips are turned down more, and I think that would help give the babies face a little more emotion and character.

I am, however, not an artist. So take my critique with a grain of salt Very Happy
And I do think that the drawing is absolutely wonderful. Despite those two things I've mentioned, you definitely captured the essence of the child, and I'm not surprised the grandmother loved it!

I've noticed all the things you guys have listed, but instead of giving up and erasing the entire thing, I just gave it to her as it was.
