50 Book Challenge!!!

Post by Kathryn Lacey on Sun Jan 10, 2010 2:28 am

I found this idea in the forums on Roliana.com ((here to be precise)).

I decided to post this in the gaming forum than the entertainment forum because it is sort of like a game.

No, this really isn't a competition. It's more for ourselves than for each other, but we can always discuss what's happening with our own personal goals.

Anyway, the challenge is to read fifty books within one year or three hundred sixty-five days to be more precise. I averaged that at being 4.2 books per month which would be about one book per week.

The only prize you'll get for completing this is the self-satisfaction of expanding your brain and your knowledge. You may even find people who have similar tastes with whom you may discuss books.

The thing about this challenge is that you choose when you begin. If you arrive months after this thread was originally created, that's just fine because you can start that very day if you like. You don't have to start when everyone else does because it's like your own personal goal. There's no reason to feel stressed because you're never behind other people.

If you complete the challenge, you may always elongate your list of books to read, or you can start fresh with a new list of fifty books to read in one year.

Honestly, if you want to set a smaller or a larger goal for yourself, I don't mind. I just thought fifty was a nice number for a year's worth of books.

Rules:
1. Post your to-read list in one post that you will edit throughout the course of the challenge. Because there is an edit button, I should not see people cluttering the thread with multiple posts of their lists. If you don't understand how to edit a post, one of the moderators of the forum or even I can help you discover it.

2. Be respectful. Just because someone wants to read a book that you dislike doesn't mean you should belittle them. You may offer your opinions on a book, but don't flame them. Not only is it against the site rules ((which should be obeyed here as well as all throughout the rest of the forums)), it's just rude.

3. The books are all of your own choosing. This isn't like a book club, and I'd prefer any spoilers not to be mentioned here or to at least be hidden within spoiler boxes.

Spoiler:
Being This Thing.
Code:
[spoiler]This is the spoiler box code.[/spoiler]

Of course, the best place to discuss books is the What Are You Reading? thread. This thread you're currently reading is mostly to just keep track of details for the challenge whether we want to update or remind ourselves of our own stats or to see the statistics of others. I'll keep this first post updated with links to both a participant's profile and to the post they made with their list of books.

4. The only books that I'm not counting are juvenile picture books or mangas because it feels like cheating because people read through them so quickly. You can choose any other books of any other shapes or sizes as long as the majority of the book is filled with text and not images. These can be fiction or non-fiction, and they can be as long or as short as you like. Of course, the challenge is going to be more difficult if you only choose hefty books, but this is a challenge to oneself, so set goals you think you may handle. I should mention that audio books are acceptable. I know not everyone has time to sit down and read something themselves, or they may have a reading disability such as dyslexia. I am understanding and sympathetic to such things.

5. Don't fret if you don't make the challenge by the end of your three hundred sixty-five days! This is just for fun. It's not life-or-death. ^^_^^

Re: 50 Book Challenge!!!

I’ll add more books as I go because I don’t want to add books to the list that I can’t acquire or something. Right now, I have all of the books from the Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny, so I’ll start with that. I finished Nine Princes in Amber at the end of 2009, so I’m beginning with the second book in the series. I’m not counting the entire volume of The Great Book of Amber because there are ten novels placed into one volume rather than short stories being compiled into one book. I’m counting each one separately.

~*~*~*~*~*

1. The Guns of Avalon by Roger Zelazny 134 pages
2. Sign of the Unicorn by Roger Zelazny 110 pages
3. The Hand of Oberon by Roger Zelazny 111 pages
4. The Courts of Chaos by Roger Zelazny 96 pages
5. Trumps of Doom by Roger Zelazny 119 pages
6. Blood of Amber by Roger Zelazny 140 pages
7. Sign of Chaos by Roger Zelazny 135 pages
8. Knight of Shadows by Roger Zelazny 139 pages
9. Jenny, My Diary by Yorick Blumenfeld 92 pages
10. Prince of Chaos by Roger Zelazny 143 pages
11. Knight of Pleasure by Margaret Mallory 378 pages

I don't think I could ever accomplish this, no matter how much I'd want to. xD
Still, a most hearty applause to Kathryn and all others who take the challenge! Clap Clap Clap

This will also be a good way to get ideas for books we want to read, by seeing what everyone else plans to read. ^^

Kalon, as I said in the first post... somewhere in there... you don't actually have to read fifty books. Fifty was just the default setting. Because this challenge is meant to be a personal challenge, individuals may set their own number of books to read within one year. I just decided to aspire high. hee hee

Silvone, sweet! I'll add your screen name to the list. When you post your list and your starting date, I'll add the date and the link. ^^_^^

Mind you, the odds are that I won't be able to come even close to this goal. I hardly read at all anymore, because I'm usually forced to spend the time I'm not busy doing the other things that I actually want to do. However, I've been wanting to start reading again to improve my roleplay, since my capacity for literature has greatly degraded over the past few years alongside my love for reading.

Thus, my personal goal is actually just to read as many books as possible over the next 365 days. While it isn't likely that I'll reach 50, I will use it as my tentative number, because I would love to get at least that far. I'll also be adding books as I go along, since making a huge list for what could end up being an epic failure would be a huge waste of time.

Just going to copy your layout, Kathryn, since it's pretty simple and attractive.

If I reach the goal, I'll continue onwards. And I can't say I'm afraid that I won't reach the goal (unless for lack of books). But there is always the plausibility of another truth.

Rereading? That allows me to finish a book at Max speed! I won't count those unless it's ones I've read around once before.

But I am slightly going against my ethics by counting books for school. But if I'm reading them, I'm reading them. Even if can be dreadfully boring.

Re: 50 Book Challenge!!!

Post by Kathryn Lacey on Sun Jan 10, 2010 5:35 pm

I’m really excited that this has taken off so well so far! Five people in one day is a great thing!

I’ve added everyone to the first post, and I’ve also decided to add how far within their goals each person has gone. If you want your goal to be a number other than fifty, let me know, and I’ll change it!

Weiss, I’m glad that you’re using this challenge as an excuse to read more. I know that there are times when I procrastinate and stop reading as much as I’d like. I figured this would also be a good reason for me to read more, too. It’s a fun motivator, and I hoped that others would see it that way, too. ^^_^^

I feel the same way that you do about listing too many books. I’d much rather list books as I go along. I figure as long as I have at least one book listed ahead of the book I’m reading, I’ll be in good hands. Plus, I don’t want to make my complete list in advance for other reasons.

I don’t mind anyone using my template. It was just meant to be an easy way for everyone - including myself - to keep track of my progress. I’m rather… crazed about being organized… often to a fault.

Moira, I see nothing wrong with being able to speed read through books because you’ve read them in the past. Of course, I do hope that many people will use this challenge to take the initiative and read new books, but I love rereading books, personally. I always catch things the second or third time around that I didn’t really understand or realize when I read them a few years earlier. It’s win-win. Of course, this is your personal challenge, so if you don’t want to count most of your re-reads, then you don’t have to do that. ^^_^^

I think books read for school count, too, though. If I was still fourteen and in my English 9 class in high school, I would totally have counted The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien as a book for this challenge. Yes, I did have an exceptionally awesome teacher for that class. ^^_^^ Even if you want to count text books, I don’t mind. I figure as long as you actually finish a book, it counts.

Bird of Hermes, am I right in assuming that you mean today ((January 10th)) to be your starting date? If not, please, let me know, so I may edit the first post with the correct date. =3

Re: 50 Book Challenge!!!

Post by Gunneh on Sun Jan 10, 2010 9:19 pm

If you don't mind, Kathryn, I'm going to count one of my novels even though I really started it in 2009. I'd hit a rough patch and had to sit it down for a long while, so I did have to reread through the first few chapters to get back into the swing of it.

Also, I'd like to put this note out for Ryona Noel: I know that we've spoken before about your wanting to be an Anthropologist and my wanting to become a Forensic Anthropologist, so I'd like to recommend the first four books as a possible read for you in the future.

You see, the name Jefferson Bass is actually just a pen name for the writing team of Jon Jefferson, an author by trade, and Dr. William Bass, a world renowned forensic anthropologist and the founder of the University of Tennessee's Anthropology Research Facility, which is also lovingly known as the Body Farm. At the Body Farm, Dr. Bass and his staff and students take different donated bodies of every shape, color and size, and they leave them in different states of rest (or unrest) to determine the rate of decomposition in different situations. Really quite interesting stuff.

Anyways...ON TO MY LIST!

**************

1. *Carved in Bone - Jefferson Bass
2. Flesh and Bone - Jefferson Bass
3. The Devil's Bones - Jefferson Bass
4. Bones of Betrayal - Jefferson Bass
5. Death's Acre - Jefferson Bass
6. Beyond the Body Farm - Jefferson Bass
7. *Storm Front - Jim Butcher
8. Fool Moon - Jim Butcher
9. Wizard and Glass - Stephen King
10. Wolves of the Calla - Stephen King

I know Kathryn. I just re-read some of my books too much, so I wouldn't count them. It was silly to read the Harry Potter books backwards, but I saw the obvious stuff like that. It was amusing to say the least.

Now to find some more books before I run out already :/

The only thing I really mind is that my name isn't Katherine, and that's not the first time you've called me by that incorrect name.

In all honesty, unless you finished your first book today, I wouldn't count it for this challenge. However, it is your own personal challenge, so if you want to count it for this even if you didn't finish it on your starting date, that's your own choice. I just wouldn't count it for me if I was the one doing it.

You've been added to the list.

I truly am sorry, dear. I was thinking about other things at the same time as typing, and my brain spelled it the way I usually see it. I'll fix it right away as I know how you hate it when people misspell your name. Also, I've edited my start date to one day ago, which is when I finished Flesh and Bone.

Again, my apologies Sad

No problem. I just figure the more times I make you feel like an ass for misspelling my name, the more times you'll have to remember to spell it properly. ^^_^^

I've edited the first post with your revised start date.

Thanks Gunneh! I'll be sure to check it out.

I hope my challenge doesn't seem to easy...I didn't get much pleasure reading in last year so I'd like to try and pick up the habit again. Also, my list is sprinkled with some textbooks, but only ones I read from start to finish.

I see no problems with your challenge. Because it's a personal thing, I see no reason why twenty-five books shouldn't be sufficient. In all honesty, I think the lowest the number should be is twelve ((one book per month)), but the books they choose are all whatever they want so long as it's more text than graphic.

Twenty-five books is a good number. There's nothing wrong with reading one book every two weeks. Besides, there's no room for criticizing or for being criticized in this thread.

Fifty books is a lofty goal in my opinion. I generally read one book every two or three weeks, but I'm trying to really test myself this year just for fun.

After all, this challenge is just for fun. I hope no one ever stresses out about not making it or anything. Everyone is different.

Anyway, textbooks are fine. I actually like reading some textbooks, but I've never read one from start to finish. More power to you, Ryona, for doing that!

Thanks Smile I hope I make it.

It really depends how it's written. A textlopedia (my freshly made up word for text books that read more like encyclopedias) is almost impossible to read from start to finish, and lower division courses always have textlopedias. As you get into upper division courses, the books tend to read more like journal articles and it is easier - and more essential - to read it start to back.

My Lab book on archaeological sciences is a collection of journal articles, so I'm not including it on the list...but that is the exception.

New contest?! Is it a story writing one? I really want to write a story and then get it ripped to pieces. I may be a glutton for punishment, but, alas, I will never improve lest I get some criticism.

Ah, Ryona. I understand. I actually sometimes enjoy reading textlopedias, though... Not all of them... but in high school, I liked to read the history textbooks we had. I just only read what was required of me because I'm lazy. =3

No, Gunneh. Those are only short stories. It has to be a book. It can be a hard cover, paperback, ebook, or whatever, but it must be a book. ^^_^^

Re: 50 Book Challenge!!!

Post by Blackrock on Mon Jan 11, 2010 4:46 am

Woah! An interesting challenge, count me in! I'm an avid reader, but recently I haven't been reading as much as I would like. Especially during these last few months, since I've got afternoon classes and that is my favourite time to read. Anyhow, I'll use this challenge as a sort of motivation and who knows? I just might make it.

I'll start off slow probably, but I plan on picking up the pace starting from February, since that is when the second semester comes and thus, the afternoons will be free Smile Also, I'll only list books, not the novels inside them, for example: I'm currently reading a collection of novellas and novels by the Brothers Strugatsky (Roadside Picnic, Hard to be a God, Definitely Maybe and The Ugly Swans) but I'll only count it as one.

Even though I entered the challenge today, I began reading this particular book yesterday, so I've listed the 10th as my starting date. Also, I'm not quite sure what I'll read after this one, so I'll update the list when I've decided. Bah, enough rambling from me, here it comes:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Collection of novels by A&B Strugatsky: 482/482
2. Snail on the Slope by A&B Strugatsky: 60/60

Anyway it's going to be a lot of reading this semester. Laughing
