Name: Matthias Kurzfeld.

Age: 26

Date of Birth: Year 674 AD, on the 12th of August.

Home County/Country: Germany.

Appearance: Matthias is lean of figure, several inches both taller and slimmer than the average Englishman of his era, with shoulder-length, raven-black hair that contrasts sharply with his naturally-fair skin and icy blue eyes. A close-cropped beard adorns his chin, of equal color to his hair, with a single silvery-grey streak of approximately one half-inch's thickness parting his beard at its center. He makes a habit of removing any moustache that may grow on his face, however thin or thick it may be.

While not on the battlefield, Matthias wears the leather tunic indicative of his blood origin- dyed black, with stylized crimson skulls adorning each sleeve and the insignia of the pyromancer emblazoned on the chest- as well as black wool-spun leggings and calf-length traveling boots. His sword is sheathed at his right side in a hilt of bound leather, with a belt woven of an unidentified, deep metallic grey mateiral supporting the blade and tightening his garb to appropriately match his form.

In combat, Matthias dons a shirt of chain mail, stained the same crimson as his tunic's distinctive markings, which he wears beneath his leather tunic. Pauldrons and greaves of a lightweight, but resilient metal cover his forearms and shins, but do not overtly reduce his mobility. A buckler shield of elliptical shape, perhaps four feet in its longest diameter, is sometimes found on his right arm, though Matthias tends to eschew such cumbersome defenses in favor of his own magical ability and well-honed dexterity.

Weapon: Hand-and-a-half flamberge.

Magic: Matthias' brand of magic could most closely be described as pyromancy, or the art and usage of arcane fire. Its secrets are closely guarded by the Kurzfeld tribes, so its origins remain unknown- though whether divine or infernal, the blaze a Kurzfeld Flammemeister (flame master, as they are referred to amongst their own kin) uses in battle is immensely destructive.
(For propriety's sake, the magic originates from a tribal deity, though the fine details will most likely remain unknown until such a time as they can be released within the story itself.)

Occupation: Matthias has filled virtually every role a soldier of fortune could be cast into, be it assassin, bodyguard, footsoldier, scout, and cavalier. Though he is loathe to admit it, Matthias despises the last role most of all, as he is posessed of a tremendous fear of horses.

Allegiance: None at present. Seeking employment first in the kingdom of Belard, but if that should fail, Leham's relative prosperity may draw Matthias into providing his services there.

Biography: Matthias' native clan were no strangers to war and hardship, considering that their homeland- a thin strip of wetland located in the northern tip of what is modern Germany- was an almost-constant battleground between the Saxons to their south and the Jutes and Danes to their north. Coincidentally, it is the size of their territory that later earned them the surname "Kurzfeld," meaning literally "short field" in German- and their ferocious defense of their lands that both shaped Matthias... and drove him away. Even from an early age, he was trained in the supposed "art" of war, learning the use of sword and shield, spear, bow, and, at the age of ten, pyromancy. He was discovered to posess a natural understanding of the Kurzfelds' unique variety of magic, and proved himself adept with the sword- if quite unskilled with other weapons- and was as such trained to hone the skills at which he excelled.

It was this training that ultimately drove Matthias from his home, for its grueling pace and unbending demands for single-minded dedication were more than the youth could hold himself to, regardless of others' discipline. At the age of fourteen, he struck out before dawn, toward the coast- and toward a port known for its strictly-enforced neutrality. From this port, he sought employment as a crewman for any merchant vessels that might be departing, and managed to secure a position aboard one such ship. Their destination was the politically-fragmented island that would one day be Britain, and in the brief time spent aboard the vessel, Matthias was taught the necessary words and phrases to deal with the Welsh and English. Though the voyage itself was hardly unpleasant, the crew's arrival in a small Welsh port was considerably less accommodating.

A mere matter of hours had passed after the galley had dropped her sails and been tied at dock when a band of marauding Saxons- some mounted and some on foot- attempted to sack the prosperous, yet horrendously unprotected port. Matthias narrowly escaped his own death by taking refuge in a small hovel off the most often-traveled paths within the town, though the image of the brutish Saxon raiders, sitting high and powerful upon their horses, would continue to plague his dreams for years to come. The following morning, Matthias crept from the relative safety of his shelter, to find the town in ruins and the crew he had set sail with long-dead. The captain himself had been decapitated, and his severed head pinned to the mast of his ship by the sword once belted 'round his own waist; at the sight of this display of brutality, Matthias felt not the fear of a victim, but the grim drive of a man who would refuse to be a victim any longer. He withdrew the blade from the mast, returned the captain's head to his body, and used his developing magic to cremate the bodies of his dead crewmates, in keeping with his tribe's own practices.

From that point onward, he set out into the battle-scarred patchwork of Britain, offering his services as a warrior to any who would bring vengeance upon the Saxons. His line of employment fluctuated greatly at first, for his imperfect language dissuaded many from hiring him, but with time, Matthias built both reputation and precision of speech, and came to be known within several circles as a skillful warrior. Over the following twelve years, he has traveled the countryside, eking out a slightly better-than-modest existence as a mercenary not only amongst the British forces, but at times aiding the northern Scots in their fight for freedom against Belard. Within the county of Teliyard, however, Matthias' magical ability is denounced as the work of demons; it is rumored that a bounty may have been placed upon his head by the church, though no indication has been made that this is certainly the case.

Name: Bishop, Markus Alexander.
Alias: "Kilo."

Species: Human.
Gender: Male.
Age: 28 years.

Appearance

Facial reference.

Markus Bishop stands five feet, eleven inches tall and weighs two hundred and twenty-seven pounds, the majority of which is condensed muscle mass. His left bicep bears a tattoo of a stylized skull that appears to be grinning, with a knife thrust to the hilt through the cranial plate, with the words "Death before Dishonor" inked in just below. This tattoo is, unfortunately, damaged by a scar that stretches nearly the full width of Markus' bicep, but he has elected not to have it redone. His shoulders are broad, giving him a stockier appearance than is accurate. His face, by and large, is not particularly distinctive- average cheekbones, neither too full nor too gaunt of a face, and a mildly hooked nose that may have been broken at one point- but his eyes, being heterochromatic (his left eye is blue while his right is green), draw considerable attention from those who actually see them. A close-cropped goatee covers his chin, black as night, and his eyebrows are notably dark- perhaps hinting at a Russian heritage. His hair is cropped fairly short, and falls straight no matter what is done to it.

Clothing/Battle Uniform: In the instance that Markus finds himself with downtime between missions, he typically wears a pair of faded grey jeans, black Converse shoes, and a close-fitting black t-shirt. It is not at all uncommon to find him wearing a well-worn leather jacket over his shirt in all but the hottest weather.

In the field, Markus wears either a standard MARPAT-scheme combat uniform, stripped of rank and insignia, or a similarly-unmarked black uniform. In both cases, he wears knee- and elbow-pads in keeping with his current uniform's color scheme, Force Recon-issue combat boots, fingerless black gloves, an MF12 gas mask, and a Kevlar-reinforced MICH helmet.

Standard Kit: Equipment: Markus wears a Condor Jungle Battle Vest, in MARPAT scheme to preserve consistency. This vest holds the majority of his ammunition, a Midland GXT500 radio, and a large hydration pack in the integrated back pouch. On his back, he carries a military-issued ALICE pack containing the following: four "spaghetti and meat sauce" MRE kits; a folding entrenching shovel; three No. 76 white phosphorous grenades; six M67 frag grenades; three M84 flashbangs; eight M18 smoke grenades- four that create white "screening" smoke, two that serve as a green signal, and two that serve as a red signal- two large medical kits (containing, amongst other items, local anesthetics, stitch-kits, hemostatic bandages, gauze, painkillers, surgical tools, disinfectants, splint kits, syringes containing adrenaline, venom-extraction kits, medical tape, general-use bandages, and- no doubt Bishop's own addition- twelve-hour energy supplements); a compact two-man tent; two oxygen canisters for his MF12 gas mask, and a Ghillie suit designed for deciduous woodland and some grasslands. Under his helmet, Markus wears a DEVGRU "Frogman" headset, connected to his radio. A large holster- designed specifically for the dual MP7's Markus carries- is strapped to each of his legs.

It is not uncommon, however, for Markus to add further equipment, or remove unnecessary supplies, depending on his current mission.

Strengths: Markus displays a natural knack for hand-to-hand fighting, in a hybridized style that mixes Hapkido, Filipino martial arts, Judo, and out-and-out unpolished brawling. He has also conditioned himself to function effectively on a minimal amount of oxygen, and can easily hold his breath for extended periods of time. He is incredibly resourceful, and shows a dedication to his mission objectives that few other contractors have shown themselves capable of. He is combat-ambidextrous, capable of using either of his hands about equally well to fire weapons, prime and lob grenades- or deliver a brutal outside hook or spearhand strike.

Weaknesses: Markus' low-oxygen conditioning is both a blessing and a curse, as he becomes winded easily and cannot sprint for very far. His social skills are, not necessarily surprisingly, far from perfect, as he is more used to shouting orders in combat and interrogating suspects than he is with diplomacy and cordial behavior. Since the introduction of his sidearm to his standard loadout, Markus has displayed mentally-unstable tendencies, including a probable case of multiple personality disorder. He has been known to "black out" on occasion and regain full consciousness some time later, though he had been observed during these reported blackouts performing vigilante activity. His overall combat effectiveness increases by seven percent during these periods, so the Gladiators Freelance Operations executives are hesitant to obstruct this new development.

Personality: It could be said that Markus Bishop's personality is similar to that of a brick wall- but in many regards, a brick wall is posessed of more features than the mercenary's personality. Experiences in his past have steadily made him more guarded and less emotionally-involved in the world around him, until ultimately, his conscious silencing of emotions became a subconscious process. As such, it is difficult for Bishop to feel much of anything, making his personality one dedicated to results and efficiency. He is, however, posessed of a subtle sense of dry, ironic humor, and has been observed on more than one occasion referring to his environment as though it were a film or electronic game. It may well be this mildly escapist tendency that keeps Bishop as sane as he is, considering his standard environment.

Family
Biological Father: Bishop, David W.
-Relationship: Sociable. Despite the intitial hardships of the divorce, Markus was reconciled with his father shortly after matters were finalized. They maintained correspondance until the time of Markus' documented "death," and Markus spent a short period of time living with his father following his ejection from his primary home.

Biological Mother: Bishop, Miranda N.
-Relationship: Great attachment. Markus cared deeply for his biological mother, and confronted his stepfather when he began to physically abuse her. He maintained contact with her until his "death," and served as a critical aspect of the court hearing which sentenced Wallace Glass to fifteen years in prison for assaulting a minor and domestic battery in the second degree. Following this court proceeding, Miranda divorced Mr. Glass and changed her last name to Bishop once again.

Stepfatherp: Glass, Wallace H.; deceased.
-Relationship: Openly hostile. Markus, 17 at the time of his parents' divorce, expressed explicit dislike toward his stepfather, even more so when Wallace Glass began to abuse Markus' biological mother and, Markus suspected, to molset Markus' sister Sarah. This resulted in a violent confrontation in which Markus was ejected from his family's home; Wallace, however, was admitted into the hospital with a compound fracture in his right radius and ulna, numerous torn ligaments in his right shoulder, and a compound fracture in his collarbone. No charges were pressed, as Markus' siblings testified on behalf of their brother that his actions were in self-defense. During the court hearing regarding Markus, however, a number of revelations were made during the trial that resulted in Glass receiving a fifteen-year prison sentence with chance for parole. He was released eight years later for assisting prison security in shutting down a narcotics ring within the prison; one month later, he was reported missing. His body was discovered six weeks after his disappearance.
-Cause of Death: 5.56mm gunshot wound that obliterated his cereberal cortex, inflicted by Markus Bishop. Authorities are unaware of his killer, though they did successfully locate his body- in a shipping crate in a railcar found in a derelict repair yard just north of the Chicago city limits. He was identified by his dental records, as his body had largely decomposed, indicating that he had been there for quite some time.

Brother: Bishop, Brandon C. (Younger brother by four years.)
-Personal Relationship: Generally pleasant. As is relatively typical, Markus and Brandon would often reach confrontations with one another, though they often reconciled such confrontations later. Brandon made a number of key statements during Markus' court hearing that testified to his brother's personal character, for which Markus expressed significant gratitude. Markus maintained occasional contact with Brandon until his "death," but was not overly involved in his brother's life once both were of the age of majority.

Sister: Bishop, Sarah E. (Younger sister by two years.)
-Personal Relationship: Protective. Markus exhibited, on numerous occasions, a fiercely protective streak toward his sister, and retained an active role in her life until his "death." He suspected that his stepfather may have molested her on at least one occasion, but did not choose to voice his concerns in court, preferring to settle his vendetta several years later. Markus often expressed his disapproval of Sarah's romance interests, but encouraged her decision to become involved with his college friend Zach Keller.

History: Markus Bishop was born in the city of Chicago, Illinois, to David and Miranda Bishop. His family, though by few accounts wealthy, lived on a comfortable middle-class budget, and as such, few major crises developed in the Bishop family to alter their son's perception of the world. Two years following Markus' birth, his sister Sarah was born, establishing early that Markus would not reasonably be the center of attention within the family; another two years later, Markus and Sarah's younger brother Brandon was born, distributing the affections of family members still further. It was, perhaps, fortuitous that all three of the Bishop children were born in close succession, to minimize any sense of over-entitlement that might have developed had they been born further apart.

All in all, Markus' life as a child was neither spectacular nor traumatizing; despite his heterochromea, Markus was rarely the target of bullying or social ostracization, as the genetic deviation was often regarded as "cool" by his peers. From an early age, Markus developed an interest in automotives and martial arts (no doubt the product of commercialized entertainment of the time)- the former being a shared hobby with his brother, and the latter one with his sister. As a result of these complimentary tastes, family outings were rarely any more stressful than they might be on the average family of five.

It was in high school that Markus' life began to take a more chaotic spiral. Throughout his first years of high school, tensions began to build within the Bishop household; during Markus' junior year, these tensions came to a head in the form of a protracted divorce that left all family members involved reeling. Worse yet was Miranda's hasty remarriage to one Wallace Glass; the man was, from lack of another comprehensive way to describe him, an utter failure of the human race. Markus expressed this opinion quite regularly, hoping to establish himself as something of a barrier between his biological family and the outsider so inclined to take them from him, but to seemingly no avail. Wallace Glass continued about his ways- and eventually, it was not only his stepfather's behavior, but Markus' sister Sarah's as well that drove the figurative nails home. During the following months, an increasingly-frustrated Markus discovered the power of fiction- and, more specifically, the strength that can come of identifying with a character. In Markus' case, it was the Marvel comic character known as the Punisher. He was instantly enamored with the idea of a character who had experienced hardship- and who saw to it that those who wronged him in the story received no less than they deserved.

Conflicts with Wallace Glass, likewise, came to an abrupt head one night when Glass, heavily intoxicated and looking for a fight, stumbled home late only to be denied access to "his" home by Markus. Confident that he had out-shouted the drunkard, Markus settled into sleep- only to be awakened a matter of minutes later to the sound of his immediate family's screams. Stopping only to get dressed, Markus confronted his stepfather- and discovered that the source of the screams had been his mother, now considerably bruised and nursing a broken wrist. It is probable that Markus suffered his first "vigilante blackout" at this point, as he immediately began to throw punches the abuser's way. The overwhelming savagery of Markus' attack inflicted several serious injuries on his stepfather- but in the end, the endurance that comes of alcoholism won out and Markus was thrown from his home. Enraged and sickened by his own apparent powerless nature, Markus took the first steps toward the emotionless visage he would later become, so absorbed by his anger and self-loathing that he hardly noticed the police that arrived on-scene minutes later- until they relocated him "for his own well-being" to his father's home.

It was a mere matter of days before the court process took place, during which Markus revealed all that he had seen- and suspected- against Wallace Glass. Apart from the obvious evidence, and a number of witnesses of character both for the Bishop family and against Mr. Glass, Markus' own siblings offered up information regarding their would-be victimizer. Markus' fears and suspicions were confirmed, and, despite a violent outburst from Markus following his sister's revelation, the jury voted unanimously to see Wallace Glass incarcerated. All charges raised against Markus for his emotionally-charged assault of his stepfather were dropped, in light of the circumstances; the judge ruled that it was a relatively cut-and-dry case of personal defense.

Markus' senior year of high school, as a result of this turbulent chapter in his life, seemed quite a blur- until the start of his second semester, when he met Ophelia Leihart. Despite their three-year age difference, the pair formed an almost immediate bond- Ophelia needed someone to support her, while Markus needed to validate his existence to himself by supporting someone. Shortly after their meeting, they entered a fast-burning relationship that, despite its almost-universal approval from both their respective groups of peers, seemed determined to withstand the test of time... until Markus decided to follow in the footsteps of his identified hero and join the U.S. Marine Corps. This decision led to much conflict between Markus and Ophelia, until eventually, on the promise that he would return to her, she agreed to support his decision.

Markus' enlistment in the Marine Corps was, though rigorous in training, uneventful. The United States simply didn't have a war to fight at the moment, and as such, Markus was never deployed abroad, only retained for elective training as part of a reconaissance unit. It was during this training that Markus was conditioned for oxygen intake, as well as taught means to adapt his fighting style to suit his personal strengths and weaknesses. After his two-year enlistment term ended, Markus returned to Chicago for a brief visit before pursuing- of all things- a degree in behavioral psychology from the University of Illinois. It was during his studies that Ophelia confronted him about his continued absence- in a face-to-face encounter. No amount of explaining could save their relationship this time, however; Ophelia stormed away, leaving Markus feeling hollow and alone yet again. Here, for a second time, his emotional state became further reserved... and completely shattered on receiving the news of her death.

Following the news of Ophelia's death, Markus took to drowning his guilt and sorrows in alcohol, pushing himself regularly to shut out the rest of the world until college was no longer a viable option for him. Now stuck with few options made available to him, Markus pursued work as a security guard through CombriCorp in the hopes that he would, perhaps, die on the job; this, however, was simply not the case. A representative of the Gladiators Freelance Operations company approached the fast-fading security guard with a tantalizing promise: work for us, and you will have the opportunity to make a difference, with the freedom that comes of being unbound by any laws. Confused, but intrigued, Markus accepted- and found himself being quickly indoctrinated into the GFO standard operating procedure. He would be considered legally dead- and for the safety, as well as sanity, of his friends and family, they could not be contacted or in any way informed that he was still alive. Markus then underwent further training in hand-to-hand combat, as well as assassination methods and combat-ambidextrousity. His training as a Marine Corps reconaissance cut the training procedures from four months to one and a half, and Markus' first contract was the elimination of one of two competing Yakuza cells in Chicago.

In the six years that followed, Markus established a name for himself within the GFO ranks as a highly-effective, if oftentimes too cold, operative, earning himself rank six support and clearance options. His success ratio maintains an impressive 17:1 rate, and through experience it has been determined that he is best-suited to assault objectives involving soft targets such as personal technology, development labs, and active personnel- and material-denial.

One breach of company policy, however, resulted in a catastrophic mission failure. Markus and a half-dozen other Gladiator operatives- Torch, Wyvern, Splice, Valkyrie, Delta-Eight, and Monitor- were inserted into a remote forest in northern Oregon and instructed to capture the "Blood Ace," a notorious international arms smuggler, as well as any contacts he may have been meeting. Each operative was dropped into the mission sector with separate, complimentary objectives- but the history of two of the operatives was not taken into consideration prior to the mission's execution. Seven seconds' hesitation on Markus' part resulted in the deaths of his fellow operatives, with the exceptions of Torch, Splice, and Monitor- because he learned that the operative known as Splice was, in fact, Ophelia. At the personal request of GFO executive Nathaniel Burnside, the two have never since operated together again.
